According to a report in The Miami Herald, a new
HHS Office of Inspector General report focuses on home health outlier payments in Miami-Dade County; and legitimate home care providers worry that the crackdown will impact some of the patients who genuinely need care.

Let's take a look at some of the findings by OIG :

  • "Miami-Dade County accounted for more Health Outlier Payments in the year 2008 than the rest of the nation as a whole.

  • "In Miami-Dade County, Medicare outlier payments for home health claims with a primary diagnosis related to diabetes were eight times more than the national average."

Medicare officials, federal prosecutors, the FBI are of the opinion that corrupt home care providers are shelling out $100 to physicians for each referral. In addition, the home health agencies are paying patients cash to use their Medicare numbers as well as bribing them with flat screen TVs, groceries and housekeeping, and the like.
